Profile

Civil Engineer; M.Sc. in Water Resources and Environment; and Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences, mention in Fluid Dynamics. Currently a researcher at the Advanced Mining Technology Center (AMTC), Universidad de Chile.

His work integrates geographic information systems, 1D, 2D and 3D numerical modeling of water and debris flows, numerical modeling of rockfall, remote sensing, and programming for automated data analysis. He also has expertise in drone-based field data collection for high-resolution topographic and hydrological studies.

Professional experience

Research Engineer

Advanced Mining Technology Center (AMTC), Universidad de Chile · Santiago · 2017 – present

  • Project Manager (2025 – present). Leads hazard assessments of debris flows and rockfall, and the design of mitigation works.
  • Project Coordinator (2022 – 2024). Coordinated the hydraulics, hydrology and geology disciplines to develop technical guidelines and new methodologies for the study of debris flows in Chile, and for hazard assessments in the context of climate change. Also coordinated fluvial mechanics studies and the design of river works.
  • Project Engineer (2017 – 2021). Ran 1D, 2D and 3D numerical simulations to characterize floods and debris flows, studied erosion and sediment yield in ravines, and identified critical infrastructure–channel points. Took part in a 3D hydrodynamic modeling study of the Mapocho River and in the detailed design of river and debris-flow control works.

Hydraulic Engineer, independent consulting projects

Santiago · 2018 – present

  • Numerical debris-flow simulations to assess mitigation works at Villa Santa Lucía.
  • Assessment of hydrological hazards affecting gas pipelines at road and stream crossings.
  • Flood numerical models for the detailed design of five major bridges on Route 5 (Ñuble, Longaví, Ancoa 1, Ancoa 2 and Maule), plus the Manuel Rodríguez (Route 78) and Nicolás Naranjo (Route C-495) bridges.
  • Flood and debris-flow models for the hydraulic design of two bridges in the Atacama Region.
  • Rating curves and gauging for ecological flow monitoring at fish farms in the Los Lagos Region.
